"ART SHOULD COMFORT THE DISTURBED & DISTURB THE COMFORTABLE"- BANKSY 〰️
My work as an artist and designer is shaped by the pain of being a woman in a world that objectifies our whole existence. Below is a new series where I paint over my nude images posted to amateur adult sites & social media without consent by my ex-husband, a man that held me captive in domestic violence for a decade until I got myself and my child out. These are just some of thousands of my images that have been uploaded and spread online by him. Since he never faced penalty through the U.S court system, this series is my own pursuit of justice. You may notice I kept his captions in each final piece: they are disturbing, and that’s the point. Too many victims suffer in silence because we don’t talk about this sort of abuse, and the captions he wrote must be witnessed. My mission is to spread awareness of domestic + sexual violence and regain the humanity he took from me. Each piece incorporates parts of myself as a human being, like my love of Tarot or the forest. Slowly, it’s helping my body catch up with my brain to understand that this wasn’t my fault, and the shame I carried for so long belongs only to the perpetrator. This series is highlighted on TikTok, click the button below to check it out and follow along.
I work primarily with watercolor, pen and ink, but I also enjoy the occasional oil painting when I have the patience. My subject matter ranges from dreamy landscapes to social commentary to classic portraits. Expressing human form and emotion is one of my favorite methods of visual crafting.
